By the same token, you would gain honor because your losses were less valuable than your opponent's losses. Your losses, even though you lost a greater number of troops, were still less valuable than the losses of your opponent. It is not at all based on winning or losing the battle itself, nor is it based on who loses the most troops overall.
It is solely based on the value of the losses you sustain versus the value of the losses your opponent sustains. You do not get honor from attacking NPC cities, only prestige.
