Power seats with memory functionality is also new. Wood inlays are available. The base A3 is equipped with a 2. The volt mild hybrid technology adds 12 horsepower and 37 pound-feet of torque, with regenerative braking capturing up to 12 kW of power. It comes with either front-wheel drive or quattro all-wheel drive and a standard 7-speed S-tronic dual-clutch automatic with manual shifting through steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
Yet it still returns an EPA-estimated 29 mpg city, 38 mpg highway, 32 mpg combined — a 2 mpg improvement compared to the previous A3. The sportier S3 is endowed with a more powerful version of the same engine, rated at horsepower and pound-feet of torque.
Quattro and the seven-speed due clutch is standard. Yet mph goes by in 4. The A3 employs a McPherson strut front suspension, and a four-link independent rear suspension. The S3 gets an adaptive suspension with dynamic chassis control.
Combine the more efficient powertrain with greatly improved aerodynamics it went from a 0. The new Quattro car achieves 31 mpg combined, while the outgoing car could only muster 25 mpg combined. Audi says the mild-hybrid system can even provide a short power boost of 12 horsepower and 37 pound-feet of torque on the initial shove off the line. Aggressive sculpting of the hood, and strong fenders increase the effect of it looking like a dog ready to pounce on unsuspecting prey.
Anybody who wishes they lived in a laser-filled Cyberpunk future will feel right at home. Two air vent modules flank the instrument cluster like pods floating in space. The sharp, slanting edges continue, tracing semi-coherent lines across the dash in an ostentatious manner. The interior door handles appear to be upside down versus the usual orientation. Just ahead of the little shifter is our least favorite feature of this new interior: the volume scroll thingy.
Yes, Audi has a handy-dandy volume scroll wheel on the steering wheel that works wonders and allows you to ignore this "innovation," but such a thing should be a helpful redundancy not a necessary work-around. Sitting in the back seat is not an issue for legs, though taller folks above 5-foot will be brushing the ceiling with their noggins. Trunk space is average for a compact luxury car at Both numbers are poor compared to non-luxury compact cars.
We started the day in an A3, and enjoyed a comfortable, reasonably quiet highway stint before ducking into the mountains. It thankfully doesn't exhibit the expected, front-heavy Audi handling behavior when the road turns twisty.
You need it to get the 3,pound car up to speed at elevation — Audi claims a 6. Yeah, even the base A3 has launch control. Audi made a choice, and it chose high MPG. If nothing else, know that the S3 is a damn good hoot to wheel up and down a mountain pass.
Its 2. Audi claims a 4. With its power-packed turbo mill, the S3 bolted up and down the Rockies with splendor and superb control. And childishly, we also wanted to hear the manufactured rumbling crackle from the quad exhaust on the overrun with every downshift. Body roll is largely flattened; steering is super precise with a good heft, and its compact footprint makes it super-easy and confidence-inspiring to fling about. We wish the S3 had the same torque-vectoring rear differential as the new Golf R does it's an Audi, shouldn't it at least have the same toys as a Volkswagen?
It also gets larger standard wheels inchers are the largest optional wheels that hide big, This mid-range model adds driver-assistance features such as lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control, but also includes luxury features such as memory settings for the driver's seat, wireless smarphone charging and more.
All S3 models come with a hp 2. This setup is similar to the last generation S3, which bolted to 60 mph in just 4. Thanks to 18 more horsepower than the previous S3, we expect the model to be at least as quick if not quicker, but we'll have to wait until we get one in for testing to confirm that. During our initial test drive , we praised the S3's lithe handling and found its powertrain to be perky, eager, and sonorous. We did note that the heavy-weighted steering in the S3 drowns out a lot of the communication from the front wheels and that there's considerable turbo lag when driving in the less frenzied Comfort driving mode.
The EPA estimates that the S3 is good for 23 mpg city and 32 mpg highway which makes it more efficient than the A35 and right on track with the Mi Gran Coupe. When we get a chance to test the S3's highway fuel economy on our mph test route, we'll update this story with results. For more information about the S3's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website. The S3's cabin is nearly identical to the new A3's but adds some racier styling elements such as sport seats with quilted leather inserts and a flat-bottomed steering wheel.
The S3 receives the same toggle-switch gear selector as the A3 as well.
