Peyton manning what type of surgery

The Cervical Spine is all the vertebra in your neck, protecting your spinal cord. The Thoracic Spine is the middle of the back, and the Lumbar Spine is the lower end of your back. Most injuries are seen either in the Cervical or Lumbar spines.

If the spine sees trauma, from a car accident or even lifting something incorrectly, it can cause the disc to tear and the jelly-like inside squirts out and puts pressure on the nerve roots connected to the spine. The pain you feel is coming from the pressure on the nerves. Sometimes a herniated disc can be treated with a smaller outpatient surgery like a laminectomy or a discectomy. The surgeon can go into the spine and only remove the portions of the disc that are putting pressure on the nerves, without having to fuse the vertebrae together.

If the disc is too badly damaged, or other spine conditions are causing instability in the spine, a surgeon recommends a fusion. We did not treat Mr. Unfortunately the pain came back with a vengeance and Peyton underwent two more decompression surgeries to try to better relieve pressure from the recurrent disc herniations. Following the surgeries the pain improved dramatically but he continued to have significant weakness in his triceps.

The story became more frustrating for Peyton, as the degeneration of the spine at that level had become more severe and x-rays began to show signs of instability abnormal motion of the cervical bones.

Instability can make compression on nerves much more serious in certain positions and hamper any type of rehabilitation. At this point the prognosis was certainly worsening as far as his ability to get back on the football field.

As his desperation increased, Peyton flew to Europe four times, trying various alternative therapies trying to improve nerve function including the use of stem cells. There continued to be no improvement.

Not only was his arm weak, but he also started losing proprioception or the awareness of his arm in space. One can imagine that at this point he must have begun to fear that his career was in serious jeopardy.

Finally, after failed conservative treatments and a long workup, Manning underwent a fourth surgery, which was a single-level anterior fusion. Watkins performed the operation on September 9 th , I was not happy to hear about a herniated disc problem since I have had a bad experience with such a thing in the past. I had to have surgery for it then too and it was not successful.

But then I met Dr. Robert Watkins and he is a wonderful person and an incredible surgeon. He fixed my herniated disc with no problems. He had to insert a bone graft and then he had to fuse the neck vertebrae.

The surgery was quick but the recovery was quite a long process. We talked about it prior to the intervention and he warned me that my specific case might require a longer period of rehabilitation. Our patient had a back procedure performed by Dr. Robert Watkins IV. Robert Watkins III. Marina del Rey, CA We use cookies to improve your future experience on our website.
