The top is aluminum, and the bottom is polycarbonate resin, which is stiffer and stronger than your typical laptop plastic. The biggest is the subpar screen, which is not even HD p resolution. That means text can appear slightly pixelated. Still, if you like the portability of the Surface Go hybrid but want the more traditional clamshell design, the Surface Laptop Go is an excellent option.
Microsoft has made Surface devices for nearly a decade now, but there are still imperfections that may impact your enjoyment. The first annoyances begin when you add a device to your cart and order it. If you're grabbing a Surface hoping to use the famous, fabulous Surface Pen with it, you'll need to buy it separately. Ports are another mixed bag for Surface devices. Confusingly, you can charge with USB-C too. This may not be a bad thing, but it feels strange with the Thunderbolt support there as well.

The base consumer-facing Pro 8 models have Intel Core i5 chips — mine has the Core iG7, which is one of the most powerful chips that Intel makes for thin and light laptops. It booted up quickly and ran whatever I needed it to. I was regularly running video calls on top of 15 or 16 Chrome tabs, a couple different apps, and even some streaming — loads that have given all kinds of premium ultraportable laptops trouble in my testing — without any slowdown or significant heat.
The Pro 8 also uses an active cooling system, which is a fancy way of saying it has a fan as well as a vapor chamber, three heat pipes, and three graphite heat spreaders. The fan did a decent job here — the chassis was sometimes toasty, but never uncomfortably hot, and I could run heavy loads for long periods of time without issue. Microsoft claimed that the Surface Pro 8 would get 16 hours of continuous battery life. Using the screen at Hz, I generally saw closer to seven hours from the same tasks which is worse but still not a disastrous result.
Charging is also decently speedy. That was with the Surface Connect charger that ships with the device. Every smart device now requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it — contracts that no one actually reads. And it was hard for me to recommend either device to those people, or to the general public. They both came with serious compromises. It combines a modern design with modern specs.
